Alaska Acting Attorney General Ed Sniffen resigned on January 27 before publishing an article alleging that he had sex with a 17-year-old girl who started a lawsuit in New Orleans in 1991.
Sniffen was coaching the moot court team when he allegedly began a relationship with Nikki Dougherty White, who is now 47 years old, reports Anchorage Daily News:, in partnership with Pro Publica և New York Times:,
In Alaska, the age of consent is 16 years, but a law passed in 1990 prohibits adults who teach, advise, or train 16- to 17-year-olds to have sex with them.
White said he has been dating Snifen for about two years since he began dating. They lived together in Anchorage when he was 18 years old. Both eventually married other people.
White told the Anchorage Daily News that Snifen bought him alcohol during a trip to New Orleans. When the newspaper asked if the sex was agreed, he answered. “Yes, with the warning that I was drunk. I was 17 years old and he was in power. ” Snifen was 27 at the time.
The special prosecutor will conduct an investigation. Gov. Mike Dunlive had previously said he would nominate Sniffen as attorney general, but Sniffen resigned when he resigned. Danlivy said he was not aware of the charges.
